Monday, April 19th, 2010Driving down my back alley this evening I saw a guy about my age with a boy a bit younger than my own son.
He was going into his back fenced yard.
He lives about 3 doors down on the opposite side. Looks like he lives in that house … I’ve never seen him before. Seems like a nice family.
I think I’m probably pretty average … busy, raising a family, and making a career.
Do I really want to know my neighbours? I know when I take the time and connect with my neighbours, everything seems better in the world.
I had the chance to be in the audience of a great theatre project at St Stephen’s Church downtown.
It was a simple production about an older woman working with a teenager to practice lines for an upcoming performance. (Queen Lear by Eugene Stickland).
I realized sitting there and being part of this audience, sharing a story, music, and conversation after the show; we all seek a greater connection. Making time to get to arts events is almost always worth it.
With all this, I encourage you to get out and walk. Meet your back ally neighbour and make your community great.
Cause if you don’t do it … nobody else will do it.

ps. I’m organizing a Jane’s walk near my home in Altadore on Sunday, May 2 at 2pm from Kiwani’s Park on the corner of 16 ST SW and 38 Ave SW. (I’ll slow down for 1.5 hours in hopes of getting to know my neighbours, share my love for our community, and learn more stories from anyone I can recruit on this walk.
