Howard Team Wins “Best of Houzz 2016”

With tremendous pride and gratitude, The Howard Team would like to thank Houzz for honoring us with their “Best of Houzz” award for 2016 in the category of customer service. Like all users of Houzz, we enjoy getting home decorating and remodeling ideas from the website and are thrilled to be chosen “Best of Houzz.”  The Houzz award means so much to us because this particular honor reflects the sentiments of the members of the Houzz online community – 35 million strong and growing at last count!  It is a great feeling to be recognized for our team’s customer service achievements since we strive to keep our clients and their needs as our central focus every day

The “Best of Houzz” prizes are awarded annually in the categories of Design, Customer Service and Photography.  Houzz is the “go to” site for homeowners looking for home improvement ideas, inspiration and up-to-date reviews on remodeling professionals and Realtors in their area.  According to Liza Hausman, Vice President of Industry Marketing for Houzz, “Anyone building, remodeling or decorating looks to Houzz for the most talented, competent and service-oriented professionals.  We’re delighted to join our community of homeowners and design enthusiasts in recognizing our “Best of Houzz” professionals around the world.”

In a real estate market as active as Calgary’s with thousands of Realtors competing for clients, it is not enough to simply offer a good product and assemble a talented team of agents.  In order to succeed in this market, you have to employ the customer service skills that our clients rightfully demand.  In addition to having a genuine fondness and respect for people, you need to have patience and attentiveness and exhibit the attention to detail that real estate transactions require.  You need to be an expert listener while also knowing how to “read” clients who may have trouble articulating their goals.  Every client brings their own unique personality, wants, needs and circumstances to the table and it is a Realtor’s job to sort through these sometimes competing interests to help a client achieve their real estate goals.

The real estate industry is ultimately more about people than bricks and mortar.  Our clients are the lifeblood of our business and our greatest resource.  We thank the Houzz community for recognizing the Howard Team’s commitment to top-notch customer service and to the clients that we serve.

Things to Do this Valenties and Family Day Weekend

This year Valentine’s Day falls on the first long weekend of the year, Family Day! So why not combine a bit of romance with some family fun time? Here are just a few of the amazing events happening in Calgary that can satisfy the need for romance and good old family fun!

Take the Family on a Bike Scavenger Hunt

Every year, Calgary hosts an annual bike festival called Winterpalooza. This year’s event kicks off on February 10 and runs until Valentine’s Day. Some of the cool events happening this year include the Annual Polar Run, the Winter Bike Scavenger Hunt and the Winterpalooza photo booth. For more information about Winterpalooza and the events that lead up to it, visit cyclepalooza.ca

Check out a winter music festival

For the music lovers, start your weekend at one of Calgary’s newest music festivals, the Block Heater Festival. Organized by the Calgary Folk Music Festival, the three day event is hosting twenty different folk and roots musical acts. A few of the performers at the inaugural festival include The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer and Elliott Brood. Tickets start low at $15. For more information, visit calgaryfolkfest.com

Spend the day at the market

One of the best things about the Calgary Farmers Market is that it’s opened year round. And if you love the market, you can get a taste of it at the Market Eatery, a satellite retail location of the restaurant. At the eatery you can buy the Market’s chocolate treats, sauces and condiments here.

On Valentine’s Day the actual market will be transformed into a romantic destination with live music and entertainment. Open for brunch and lunch, visitors can enjoy a roaming musical quartet, make fruit flower Valentine’s with Poppy Innovations, and capture your love in their romantic photo booth. Check out calgaryfarmersmarket.ca for more details.

Celebrate all things winter in Canmore

The Canmore Winter Carnival has been happening for more than two decades and returns on February 1. Plan a weekend getaway to enjoy all the different carnival events such as the World Cup Biathlon event, cooking classes, art workshops and mutt races that take place until the end of March.

Go shopping at a new Italian market

Sauce Italian Market is a bakery, a deli, a market and a restaurant. With specials every day of the week you can stop by for a coffee or lunch to enjoy some of the spectacular food or one of their daily specials. (The two-for-one pizza deal on Tuesdays is hard to pass up.) After you eat, check out the grocery store where you’ll find signature sauces, house-made pasta, salad dressings and plenty of imported cheeses and charcuterie.

There are so many other amazing events happening in the city on Valentine’s/Family Day weekend. And with a wide variety of great restaurants in the neighbourhood your choices are endless! Enjoy the weekend!

Spreading Christmas Cheer in Calgary

Spreading Christmas Cheer in Calgary

Christmas in Calgary is a magical and memorable experience. In addition to being the best time of year to catch up with friends and relations, it is also the perfect tine to give back to our community. There are countless ways to give of your time and money to make someone else’s Christmas just a little brighter. Start with your own church, club or civic organization to determine where the need is greatest and take it from there. Otherwise, here are a few volunteer ideas to get you started:

Women’s Centre of Calgary – Toy Room Volunteer

The Women’s Centre of Calgary needs volunteer workers to set-up and staff its annual December Toy Room for local women and their children in need of Christmas cheer. Shifts run about three hours and are flexible. Gift wrapping skills are appreciated, but not needed.

Calgary Seniors’ Adopt a Grandparent Program

No one deserves to be alone during the holidays – particularly our treasured senior citizens. Unfortunately, too many are. From November 1st thru January 15th, the Adopt a Grandparent Program organizes volunteer visits, complete with stuffed stockings, to homebound elders. Spend an hour with an adopted grandparent and you will have an experience to treasure forever.

Heritage Park Historical Village

If you are a local history buff and can never get enough of the History Channel, consider volunteering at Calgary’s amazing Heritage Park during the holiday season. Help is needed in retail sales, cookie decorating and hospitality hosting. It’s a great way to pick up some new skills for your resume and enjoy the Park’s Christmas festivities at the same time.

The Magic of Christmas

Founded in 1983, this charitable program has grown exponentially to the point where a volunteer family of 500 Santas and elves delivers presents and Christmas spirit to nearly 5,000 families and patients in hospitals and other institutions throughout the city.   Stay alert – gangs of rowdy elves are known to sometimes overtake cars to bombard the occupants with carols!

The mission of all of these wonderful Calgary organizations is to spread the message of love, sharing and caring throughout the season and remind us all of the real meaning of Christmas.

Merry Christmas from Team Howard!

Which Sport is YOUR Game?

Which Sport is YOUR Game?

If you could start over and be a kid again, which sports would you choose to participate in?  Being active is a big part of my family’s lifestyle.  It seems that our favorite sports are the ones that we are familiar with because we know our own abilities.  Especially as an adult, it might be intimidating to go out on a limb and try something brand new.

For the kids in Calgary, there is a unique opportunity to try their hands (and feet!) at a whole range of activities.  Leaving the Talisman Centre after a swim yesterday, I noticed a poster promoting “ALL SPORT ONE DAY“. The event takes place on June 20 and features a full day of sport discovery for kids aged 6 to 12.  That’s 50 exciting sports to try in 14 facilities around Calgary.

Bike racing in Edmonton recently as a ‘master blaster’ at Velocity Stage Race, I had an ‘epic for me’ 3rd place finish with a ‘long ago’ Olympic Rower Joe S.  We finished 3rd and 4th by taking a chance and breaking from the peloton with 5km left in the race.  After the race, I asked him if he would encourage his kids into rowing. From my perspective, it looks like a peaceful and beautiful sport.  His response surprised me.  “Oh no,” he said, “I hate that sport.  It’s the same lake – over and over again. So boring.  I love cycling and the variety of terrain you get to see.”

I guess that got me thinking – what is the right sport?

Growing up I played all kinds school sports.  I spent a great deal of time alpine skiing and then got pretty good at Rugby and played during University.  I suppose Rugby set me up to be a pretty tough endurance athlete.

I’m not sure I would have wanted my parents to do anything different in terms of promoting a particular sport to me.  I was fortunate to be exposed to plenty of challenging activities and have maintained a love for athletics all my life.

Times are different now.  Just the other day, I saw a couple of kids outside on the street playing street hockey. That was awesome. It not something you see as often anymore, but it reminds you of a time when sports weren’t limited to organized leagues.  Kids just played to have fun.

I recently heard an interview where an adult vocalized that kids from Junior High to High School should have a compulsory sport; meaning they MUST participate.  It’s an interesting idea, and probably one that would be met with a range of strong opinions.  Athletics aren’t necessarily for everyone, but there are so many life skills that can be derived from achieving an athletic skill or playing on a team.

I tend to agree with this concept, and it wouldn’t hurt to get kids committed to learning a musical instrument as well!  In my job, I visit plenty of homes and see a lot of kids staring into devices.  While I don’t like it, I understand it. My home is the same, and as adult, we are also guilty as charged.  Technology has taken the place of real life activities in many ways.

Living in Calgary, we really do have the opportunity to shape our kids lives and assist them with their high performance sporting goals. Many young Canadians travel to Calgary to live with host families and train with our great coaches and facilities.

If you know kids between 6 and 12 years, try to encourage them and their parents to participate in the All Sport One Day on June 20. Who knows, your kids may discover some amazing abilities that they didn’t even know they had!

So – knowing what you know now, which sport would have been right for you as a teenager?  Do you wish you had committed to a team sport so you could feel confident about joining a league as as adult?  Are there any athletic activities that you recently discovered that are now an important part of your life?  Which sport would you direct your ‘loved’ neighbours, nieces, nephews, and kids into?

Have a great weekend.

Celebrating Summer in Calgary

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

Planning on heading out to enjoy some of the summer festivals this year around Calgary? There are so many great events to choose from. Although nothing can quite stack up against the Stampede, each festival offers its own unique selection of food, vendors and entertainment.

Kicking off the summertime is the Lilac Festival, held on Sunday, May 25th . This one day celebration takes place on 4th Street between 13th Ave South and Elbow Drive. With spring in the air, it’s a great time to shake off the winter blues and come out for the parade and a full day of family entertainment.

In June, the Father’s Day Festival is taking place on 8th Ave between 4th and 7th . The street will be closed for pedestrian access only during the Father’s Day weekend and there will be street performers, live music and a cool car show.

The Banff Bike Fest, taking place on June 12th to 15th , is the perfect excuse to head out of town. Cycling enthusiasts will have a chance to participate in one of seven competitive and non-competitive races. There is over $20,000 in prize money up for grabs this year.

Craving some authentic souvlaki? The annual Calgary Greek Festival welcomes over 10,000 guests at the Hellenic Community Centre. This festival takes place on June 21st to the 23rd this year.

Ready for patio season? The Kensington Sun and Salsa Festival is the place to be on July 20th . This year marks the 21st anniversary of Kensington Village’s annual festivities. Visitors can sample a wide variety of salsas, shop from the street merchants and enjoy one of the many local restaurants.

This year’s Ironman 70.3, being held on July 27th , was so popular, it actually sold out. If you were lucky enough to get a spot in what is considered to be one of the most challenging and scenic Ironman courses, you are in for an exciting and memorable day.

You don’t need to go all the way to New Orleans for Mardi Gras – you can find it right here in Marda Loop! This family festival takes place on August 10th . The Kids Quarter will have bouncy castles, games and face painting. Check out the Art Tent to see some of our local talent on display.

Looking for your next favorite restaurant? The Taste of Calgary is a one-stop-shop where you can sample the best cuisine from local vendors. The event takes place from August 14th – 17th at Eau Claire Festival Plaza. Guests can purchase $1 food tickets that they can redeem for tasty snacks and beverages from over thirty local establishments. This is a great way to try something new and discover a whole bunch of great restaurants at once.

If you are planning on staying in the city for the August Long Weekend, you will want to check out the Dragon Boat Festival at Glenmore Reservoir.  This even draws hundreds of competitors who have been training hard all summer to be the fastest team on the water.  This exciting cultural event celebrates the ancient sport of dragon boat racing and has plenty of entertainment to make it worth spending the day.
