Snow Kiting – Wilcox Bowl

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017

I’ve been interested in kite boarding for a few years. In September of 2015, I took a lesson in Malpeque Bay, Prince Edward Island … with a fierce determination that I would learn. That day I kited 50 km … and the passion began.

I have yet to water kite in Alberta. I never thought I would.  Kiting to me was just going to be something I do, while on vacation.  However, while my son Jacob was home from school in Victoria at Christmas,  we discovered snow kiting on Weed Lake, East of Calgary.

On Saturday, March 25/17 … Patrice, Ian, Michael and Ryan and I traveled to Wilcox Pass in the Columbia Icefields near Jasper.

After a 3.5 hour drive, we ski toured up about 50 minutes before reaching the less steep entrance to Wilcox Pass.   (Feeling we were quite ‘out there’ it was a bit of a surprise to discover two Adirondack Chairs placed and steering out into the Valley.) Jasper National Park Red Chair Program

As we were about to Launch our kites at about noon … the wind died.

It didn’t matter … it was amazing just to be in this location.

I struggled trying to launch my kite … then rested taking in the sites for an hour or more.

Finally, at about 3:30pm … the wind picked up and grew a bit more consistent.

We kited until 5:30, before packing up, and skiing down to the car … we were all in bliss.

Life’s Inspiration (Calgary International Children’s Festival)

My wife Shirley and our son playing frisbee

My family is one of the things in my life that inspires me to work hard, take care of myself and do my best in everything that  I set out to do.  Even though our kids are getting older, my wife and I like to spend time with them whenever their busy scheduels and our allow.  We appreciate the great outdoors together by going hiking, kayaking, or just a walk with our dog Max in the local parks.  We try to go cross country skiing a few times a year.  After a busy day, we all realy enjoy a meal together at home as a family.  The time that we spend together creates lots of great memories and allows us to talk and enjoy each other’s company.

My son is especially good  at reminding my wife and I about the importance of our connections with our friends and family.  Like everyone else our lives get busy with work and other obligations, and he will freuquently ask a question –  making sure that we take the time to connect with the people that are important to us.  Sometimes our kids need to remind us where our real priorities lie when we get caught up in the details of our daily lives.

One of the best things about living in Calgary is that there is no shortage of activities that you can do as a family.  Whether your family enjoys outdoor activities, theatre, or science – there is something for every age and activity level.  Each season brings new opportunities for adventure and trying to keeping up with the kids is sure to keep you feeling young at heart.

If you are looking for an exciting event this spring, The Calgary International Children’s Festival is taking place May 21st to the 24 th .  This is a great family event that offers live shows, open air activities, and a toy theater.  Bring your kids to get their faces painted and enjoy all the lively entertainment that this show has to offer.

Altadore Real Estate: My Favorite Restaurants

Sunday, February 9th, 2014

Thinking about moving to Altadore? It is a vibrant area that provides great in-city living close to Marda Loop; and what a selection of great restaurants! I’m always up for a great meal and have a few favorites.

Good Old Canadian

When I just want to unwind, I often go to a Fergus and Bix, They have a great selection of Canadian beers, and their burgers are just as good.

French and Italian

French cuisine gets my thumbs up in several upscale bistros. Cassis has a chef from the south of France that brings real authenticity. They even shop next door at Market 17 (close by at the Casel Marche) for fresh ingredients. Both Avec and Fleur de Sel give you variety in French food and atmosphere. And there’s always classic Italian at a new trattoria, Borgo; try their ‘sperlunga’ for a bit of everything.

Mediterranean and Asian

If you are looking for a good selection of Mediterranean, try Brava Bistro. They blend the Mediterranean flare with some North American splash. Check out their wine list.  I’m also a big fan of Indian food and that curry heat, so I suggest Moti Mohal, which has a classic Kashmiri menu. So now I’ve made myself hungry!

There has been quite a frenzy of growth and development in Altadore. The area offers city lovers a great opportunity to live where they can walk to some of my favorite restaurants and more. The neighborhood is known for blending a range of residential options with the conveniences of one of our most popular shopping areas and an easy walk to River Park for a stroll along the river. Altadore was named one of Calgary’s best neighborhoods in 2010. I know the area well, both the real estate and the restaurants. I’m always glad to help my clients pick the best of both.

Try Winter Ski Events To Take Advantage Of Our Great Outdoors

Bryon and wife Shirley at the first Alberta Cup Race of this season in Canmore. Shirley won a Silver Medal for her age group in the Skate Category!

I love skiing; it’s great exercise but even more than that, it gets me out in our spectacular winter environment. These events bring out a big crowd ready for a little competition and a lot of fun. Many of the events are family-oriented. In February, there are two events worth noting. Try one out yourself.

Canadian Birkenbeiner Ski Festival

The premier ski event in this area is the Canadian Birkenbeiner Ski Festival. It’s held the second Saturday in February every winter (7th and 8th this year). The event is east of Edmonton at Cooking Lake. It usually attracts about 2,000 skiers and has something for everybody, so bring the family! The five events offer an opportunity to participate no matter what the age or ability. I’ve done this race before. If you’re not up to the skiing, volunteer. There are over 600 volunteers who take part as well. People come from all over Canada to this event. Enjoy the very festive atmosphere, the great skiing and the scenery.

Cookie Race

This year, I’m also considering the 37th annual Kananaskis Ski Marathon, better known as the “Cookie Race.” Yes, there are cookies along the way and yes, it’s a marathon, so lots of cookies. This year, it will be held at Peter Lougheed Provincial Park on Saturday, February 22. I can’t imagine how many cookies it takes to satisfy over 600 skiers.

Here are some tips for participating in ski events:

  • Show up on time. This means get there in plenty of time to park, suit up, prep your gear and not rush to the start line. It can be nerve-racking to cut it too close and have to rush. Put energy into skiing, not in worrying about the time.
  • Dress right; this can be challenging. It’s cold, sure, but you warm up quickly and need to shed layers. Not too cold and not too hot.
  • Get the right wax for your skis. If you’re not sure, ask someone or go to a ski shop. The right wax makes a big difference in the amount of effort and energy you have to put out.

I’m looking forward to getting out and enjoying the scenery we are so fortunate to have here in Alberta. Skiing is great exercise and good for the entire family. Let me know if you will try one of the events I’ve mentioned!

Heroic Efforts, Community Support & Real Estate Challenges – Our Calgary Flood

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

The stories emerging of heroic efforts and community support in Calgary and southern Alberta are a reminder of how resilient we are. We will get through this. The Stampede must go on! My thoughts go out to all Albertans affected by the flood, in every community throughout the province.

This natural disaster will present unique challenges as it pertains to your, and your friends real estate needs. Those most affected by the flooding will truly be facing a unique situation and will require a level of compassion, creativity and professional expertise to assist in navigating their real estate situation.

This maybe the perfect time for you to move to your next dream home … and provide a home for a family in need. With the number of people that have had damage to their homes – there will be many people looking to buy in the next 6 months. (Also, I expect an influx of migration into Alberta as workers come to assist with the restoration process.) If you are thinking about moving, you can provide a home for people that need a new home.

I am pleased for the opportunity to assist where required – even if only a simple consult to direct folks to the right resources.

I can be most helpful in a few key areas:

1. Assisting in the assessment of housing requirements – near and mid term

2. Sourcing immediate term housing solutions – rentals or quick possession purchases

3. Evaluating real estate assets and how best to protect these investments

4. Searching for a longer term solution if required

I have recently done three separate searches which focus on quick possessions.  I am available for you and your friends, and am happy to provide a showing or activate a more detailed search should they wish. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/t9y7z49kk4e980r/087svLCe6c

I think about 15 guys and gals showed up for the annual 100 km Cross Country Ski at Peter Lougheed Park yesterday … led by Team Mito. Big shout out to Brigid who prepared a wonderful lunch of chilli! Great day! “Best conditions in the 5 years of the big ski” – said Brendan who has done ’em all. (I arrived late during the 2nd loop … and skiied about 35 km.) Super beautiful & super fun – I made a movie capturing a wee bit of the day that I was a part off.

Branding Bryon Howard … (say it like Brian – damn it!)

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Recently , I’ve been considering the spelling of my name. Way to many people think my name is pronounced Byron … but it is pronounced Brian. It’s really screwed up … because it’s spelled Bryon.

I’m not sure why my parents did this to me.  I still love ’em … even though since grade 1 … on the 1st day of school the teacher called me Byron … and all the kids laughed … and called me this until about November.  This happens less frequently since high school … but still happens at least every three or four years.  (I’m really glad I’m not still in school. That sucked.)

I like my last name … and will work on branding it. Howard is cool. Bryon is alright. I hate Byron. I’m not fancy about Brian.

I love selling Calgary real estate … and want it to be easy for people to recognize me … and find me.  I work with ReMax … which is a powerful brand and has 37% of the market share in Calgary. I want my personal brand to match ReMax … and will ALWAYS use the ReMax logo along with this brand concept.

Below are some concepts that my good friend Greg Kolodziejzyk came up with.

I told Greg that I wanted to copy Greg Hamre’s logo. (See below the header from The Hamre Team’s website.) I met Greg Hamre and his bro at a ReMax conference in Banff in November. He’s a super cool guy. He and his family sell Real Estate in Ottawa. http://www.weknowottawa.com  (I hope he doesn’t mind. I’ll have to remember to ask him.)

I’m leaning towards the logo on the top right corner. If you have any thoughts on this … you could post below – or send me an email.
