Enjoy a Winter Blast in Calgary

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

Winter is a wonderful time to plan a visit to Calgary.  The locals here do not hide from Mother Nature’s fierce chill.  They embrace it and extract every bit of snow and ice related fun imaginable.  If snow and ice are not your thing, that’s OK too.  In Calgary, frigid temperatures are never an excuse to not explore the city.  With the world’s largest pedestrian skywalk system spanning more than 16 km, you can enjoy all that downtown Calgary has to offer while leaving your snow boots and parka at home.

Parks, Paths and Hiking

Many of the city’s parks offer year-round recreational opportunities.  The 580-km regional pathway system helps locals keep fit year-round and offers several wintertime fun runs, including the Hypothermic Half Marathon in February.  Many of the trails are kept clear of snow and ice for the enjoyment of walkers, runners and cycling enthusiasts.

Winter Sports

Don’t forget that Calgary sits at the base of the Canadian Rockies – home to world class facilities for skiers and snowboarders.  Some of the best runs in the world are within a few hours’ drive from the city at Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise and Nakiska Ski Resort, but you do not need to travel at all to participate in your favourite winter sports while in Calgary.  You can snowshoe, cross country ski, play hockey, ice skate, sled and even learn to luge at facilities throughout the city, including Canada Olympic Park, originally constructed for the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Festivals

Calgary is a festival goers dream – for visitors and locals alike.  It starts with the Stampede in the summer and continues for 12 months.  The frosty winter months offer plenty of opportunity for outdoor and indoor partying – everything from film and music festivals, food and wine tasting to avant garde theatre and motorcycle expos.  There is even an annual citywide Hot Chocolate Festival in which local eateries compete for the best hot chocolate recipes.  The proceeds of this event go to support Calgary’s Meals-on-Wheels program.

Calgary offers endless options for outdoor adventure and indoor exploration during the cold season.    Don’t let a little winter chill keep you from enjoying everything our city has to offer.  Take your pick and have a blast!

Tips for Kickstarting your Christmas Spirit

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

With so much conflict and uncertainty in the world this year, it is not hard to understand how some people may be having trouble summoning the Christmas spirit.  If you find yourself cringing instead of smiling as the holidays draw near, here are a few tips for getting in the Christmas groove – Calgary style.

  1. Start with Music – Create your own Christmas playlist and blast that music until it rocks. Choose your favourite carols and artists – songs that remind you of your childhood or a time in your life when things seemed simple.
  2. Make a List and Check It Twice – To avoid getting overwhelmed by all you must do to prepare for the holiday, make a Christmas “To Do” list and take pride and delight in crossing items off once they are done. If you’re not careful, anxiety over workloads and tasks will keep you from enjoying time spent with friends and family. To avoid a meltdown, get organized and stay organized.
  3. Pay it Forward – If your financial situation permits, buy a gift or donate to a stranger or local family in need of Christmas cheer. If money is tight, take a few minutes to shovel snow from your elderly neighbour’s walkway.  You will be amazed at how far a simple act of kindness goes toward lifting your spirits.  Joy is truly found in giving.
  4. Set the Stage – Pull your Christmas boxes from storage and do a little decorating. Take the time to examine individual ornaments that hold treasured family memories and reminders of Christmases gone by.  Once the tree is up, kick back, put on your favourite Christmas movie and enjoy a steaming cup of hot chocolate or eggnog.
  5. Visit a Christmas Market – Instead of doing all your shopping on-line or at a mall, take a stroll through one of Calgary’s vibrant Christmas markets. Support the fine work of local craftspeople and artists and find something for everyone on your list.
  6. Ice Skate in a City Park – You may find magic in the air after lacing on your skates and taking a few turns around a rink in one of Calgary’s beautiful city parks. The crisp winter air and Christmas tunes playing over loudspeakers should lift your spirits.

Tinsel, garland, presents and twinkling lights are all just signs of the holiday season.  They are there to look pretty and help get you in the mood.  They are not, however, what Christmas is about.  Christmas is about rebirth and renewal, love and sharing.  Invest time giving of yourself this year and spending quality time with the ones you love.

The world outside may be frightful at times.  Instead of letting that fact get you down, use it as a reason to appreciate and connect with your family and friends, embrace your holiday traditions and make it a Christmas to remember.

Merry Christmas to all!

Spreading Christmas Cheer in Calgary

Spreading Christmas Cheer in Calgary

Christmas in Calgary is a magical and memorable experience. In addition to being the best time of year to catch up with friends and relations, it is also the perfect tine to give back to our community. There are countless ways to give of your time and money to make someone else’s Christmas just a little brighter. Start with your own church, club or civic organization to determine where the need is greatest and take it from there. Otherwise, here are a few volunteer ideas to get you started:

Women’s Centre of Calgary – Toy Room Volunteer

The Women’s Centre of Calgary needs volunteer workers to set-up and staff its annual December Toy Room for local women and their children in need of Christmas cheer. Shifts run about three hours and are flexible. Gift wrapping skills are appreciated, but not needed.

Calgary Seniors’ Adopt a Grandparent Program

No one deserves to be alone during the holidays – particularly our treasured senior citizens. Unfortunately, too many are. From November 1st thru January 15th, the Adopt a Grandparent Program organizes volunteer visits, complete with stuffed stockings, to homebound elders. Spend an hour with an adopted grandparent and you will have an experience to treasure forever.

Heritage Park Historical Village

If you are a local history buff and can never get enough of the History Channel, consider volunteering at Calgary’s amazing Heritage Park during the holiday season. Help is needed in retail sales, cookie decorating and hospitality hosting. It’s a great way to pick up some new skills for your resume and enjoy the Park’s Christmas festivities at the same time.

The Magic of Christmas

Founded in 1983, this charitable program has grown exponentially to the point where a volunteer family of 500 Santas and elves delivers presents and Christmas spirit to nearly 5,000 families and patients in hospitals and other institutions throughout the city.   Stay alert – gangs of rowdy elves are known to sometimes overtake cars to bombard the occupants with carols!

The mission of all of these wonderful Calgary organizations is to spread the message of love, sharing and caring throughout the season and remind us all of the real meaning of Christmas.

Merry Christmas from Team Howard!

Wishing You All a Merry Christmas

Wishing You All a Merry Christmas

Hurray the holidays are finally here! The snow has fallen, and melted… and fallen and everywhere you look, there are signs of the festive season. The bright lights and beautiful music make the cold weather not so bad after all. In fact, Calgary is a great place to be during Christmas time. There are plenty of events happening around the city to help you get in the spirit of the festivities.

Our family looks forward to the holidays as a time to relax, unwind, and spend time together. We also make it a point to enjoy the great outdoors. Heading to the mountains for a few days of skiing has become an annual tradition. Even though everyone is way faster then me now, I still love it! When you have some of the best slopes in the country just an hour or two away, staying indoors all winter is not an option! Walks in the city that give us mountain views can be breathtaking. The pinkish glow of the early morning sun on mountain peaks always stops me in my tracks.

The holidays are all about family and traditions, and of course, the food. Every family has their own special recipes. I love to make French Breakfast Puffs fresh on Christmas morning. They are an easy and simple treat that we now refer to as “Christmas Puffs”. I put the ingredients together the night before, so it’s an easy task on Christmas morning. I’ve included the recipe below. Thanks to my Mom for sharing it with me many years ago.

French Breakfast Puffs

Combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon; set aside.

In a bowl stir together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and 1/8 teaspoon salt.

In another bowl, combine 1 beaten egg, 1/2 cup milk, and 1/3 cup melted margarine or butter; add to flour mixture, stirring just till moistened.

Lightly grease muffin cups or line with paper bake cups; fill 2/3 full.

Bake in a 350 oven for 20 to 25 minutes or till golden.

Immediately dip tops into 3 tablespoons melted margarine, then into sugar-cinnamon mixture.

Server warm. Makes 12.

From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Find some time to unwind and make special memories with the people that matter most. Travel safe if you plan on escaping to somewhere a little warmer or plan on traveling across the country to visit loved ones. At the end of the day, our family and friends are what makes it all worthwhile.

We wish you all the best and we look forward to connecting with you again in the New Year.

What I Wish For You In The Coming Year

Another Yuletide season is upon us and I wish you all happiness with your families and meaningful connections at Christmas. No matter how you choose to celebrate the holidays, enjoy yourself and enjoy the time that you will be spending with your family and friends. I hope you will also take the time to be with Mother Nature. Get out for a cross-country ski or some outdoor skating, or maybe even just a walk in the park. Let’s not forget the greatest blessings we have apart from our loved ones – the air we breathe, the beauty all around us, the life we’re given each day, and the second chances, just as winter makes way for spring and summer.

The New Year brings new excitement. I hope everyone will look forward to the New Year with great expectations. Think up meaningful new experiences for you and your family – not only about the new things you want to have and the wonderful places you haven’t been to, but also about all the good things you can do. For my family, we’ll all go to a bookstore, buy a bunch of magazines and look at the pictures, then cut out some pictures of the experiences we want to have for ourselves this year. That’s a great way to get all of us working hard to achieve those dreams.

You can even set some goals for yourself. Being in sales, that is something that I regularly do. I set goals and think about what value I can add to folks. Then I work out how I’ll achieve those goals. I have some financial goals that are obviously important for a family man like me, but there are also health goals, education goals, family and relationship goals, and spiritual goals.

Have you thought about what experiences you want to have in 2014? Whatever they are, I wish you’ll live your dreams this coming year. Merry Christmas and let’s keep connecting!
